What is Specialist Dementia Care?

Dementia can result in a change to the way in which you perceive the world.

Dementia can affect transformations to the way you remember, feel, behave and communicate. As a result, there may come a time when your loved one is finding it increasingly difficult to live independently at home even with support from professional carers, family or friends. Residential Dementia care offers a secure environment where loved ones can experience the well-being and fulfilment that reflects their own choices, with fully-trained staff always on hand 24 hours a day to offer care and assistance when needed.

Specialist Dementia Care at Ysguborwen House

Every day we aim to enrich the lives of our family members who are entrusted to our care. Our ethos is based around the understanding that we put the resident first, recognising their individual needs, rights and preferences.

Our extensive health and well-being activities program is carefully designed to accommodate each resident’s interests and pastimes. A wide range of meals are made fresh daily by our chefs, all of whom share the same passion for locally sourced high-quality home cooked cuisine. We understand what a challenging time the transition to residential dementia care can be, entrusting the care of your loved one to others. Our regular relative events held in a relaxed environment can help to acknowledge and share those experiences, as well as assist in shaping the future of care at Ysguborwen. Our daily mantra is enriching lives together – by involving residents, relatives and staff into our dementia care family we can ensure every individual experiences the highest quality of life.

Dementia friendly bedrooms

Specifically designed furniture and layout in the bedrooms helps promote independence and dignity. Personal touches are always welcomed and encouraged.

Pamper room

Our purpose-created pamper room complete with hair and nail salon is the perfect place to help residents feel extra special.

Innovative Care

Our focus on innovation and technology enables us to push the boundaries of high quality dementia care. We meticulously research every potential innovative addition to the home, to ensure it will enhance the lived experience.

We were one of the first care homes in the country to purchase an interactive magic table (see a video here). A fun care innovation that connects older people on their dementia journey with each other and with their surroundings though infrared technology.

All the care plans and daily records including individual and collective activities as well as medication administration are maintained and updated through our online Care&Clinical system. Our numerous electronic devices allow for continuous recording of any actions by the care team, building a 24 hour care record for everyone at Ysguborwen.

Key Information

We accept both self-funded and state-funded residents. However, Local Authority funding often do not cover the full care costs of the care home. This may well mean a third party will need to provide top-up funding to cover the full costs.  Please see our leaflet on funding your care with us. Age UK also produce a factsheet on paying for residential care.

We are a care home specialising in nursing and residential dementia care, nestled in a picturesque valley and surrounded by countryside. We have 80 registered beds, most of which are ensuite and some with wet room facilities.

Room rates range from £830. Included in these rates are fully trained staff in 24 hours attendance, all meals using fresh local produce where possible, in house laundry service, nurse call system, daily wellbeing activities. Additional services such as private chiropody and hairdressing will incur supplementary charges.

Self-funding, top up or service user rates are charged four weeks in advance and payable by cheque, bacs or regular standing order.  Our room rates are reviewed on an annual basis as set out under the terms of the contract. We provide you with at least 28 days notice in writing of these changes.

A relative shares their thoughts

'The staff and leaders of Ysguborwen show how nursing home care at the end of your life can be something that is a positive and happy experience. Every single member of staff works as a team and treats all residents, including my father, like one of their own. The food is to a very high standard, including the soft diet options. The atmosphere is homely and friendly, the activities are suitably varied to suit everyone's needs and relatives are treated and cared for as well as the residents.

The new outdoor spaces that have been created, including the pond and walkways, are superb. They give the residents some wonderful outdoor space to go out and do some gardening, take a walk or sit in the sun and you can see the enjoyment in their faces.'

The Ysguborwen team has spent a great deal of time and effort in developing the home since my father started his visits and we have been so impressed with the service. When the time came for full time care we had no hesitation in seeking permanent accommodation at Ysguborwen for him.'
